HARRISON TOWNSHIP — Detectives with the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the drowning death of a 19-month-old girl in Harrison Township June 14.
According to Public Information Officer Renee Yax, emergency personnel were called to the 38000 block of Mallast Street at approximately 7:15 p.m. in response to a baby not breathing.
Yax indicates that the 911 call was made by a neighbor of the victim’s family.
When deputies arrived, they observed the child not breathing and attempted CPR. She was then transported to McLaren Macomb hospital in Mount Clemens where she was pronounced dead.
Deputies spoke to witnesses, as well as the child’s parents, who stated that they were having a barbecue when they noticed the child was not inside the house with the other small children. They began searching for the child, at which time she was found in the canal directly behind the home, the report states.
The child was pulled from the water, but could not be revived.
The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the incident, Yax reports.
