By: | Mount Clemens - Clinton - Harrison Journal | Published August 8, 2017

Team name: Mount Clemens Battling Bathers
Last season’s record: 1-3
League: Independent
Returning starters: N/A
First game: 7 p.m. Aug. 25 vs. Detroit Communication/Media Arts

Offensive keys:
The team is back after a year in flux. The Bathers have seven games scheduled this fall, including four against Detroit squads. That’s up from four in 2016 — the last two of which resulted in forfeit losses.
The lone win last season was a 58-28 decision against Marine City Cardinal Mooney.

Defensive keys:
If the Bathers defense will make any noise this season, it should be early. Mount Clemens’ first three games are against teams (Detroit CMA, Detroit Douglass and Detroit Old Redford Academy) that went a combined 4-23 last season. Those three squads in 27 games scored a combined 127 points.

Coach’s outlook:
Mount Clemens did not respond for comment.

2017 Schedule:

vs. Detroit Communication/Media Arts (1-8) — 7 p.m. Aug. 25
The Bathers hope to bounce back after only playing four games last season, due to not having enough players on the roster. CMA is 3-24 in three years as a varsity program.

vs. Detroit Douglass (1-8) — 4 p.m. Aug. 31
This is the first-ever meeting between the Bathers and Hurricanes. Mount Clemens has one win since the start of the 2015 season. Douglass was shut out five times in 2016 and scored 31 points total in nine games.

vs. Detroit Old Redford Academy (2-7) — 7 p.m. Sept. 8
The Week 3 contest marks the first matchup between the two squads. Old Redford has won just five games the last two seasons after three above .500 finishes from 2012 to 2014.

vs. Harper Woods High (5-4) — 7 p.m. Sept. 15
The Week 4 matchup marks the first time the Bathers and Pioneers will square off. Mount Clemens has not finished with a winning record since 1994. Harper Woods is 2-8 in its last 10 games against teams from Macomb County.

at Swartz Creek High (1-8) — 7 p.m. Sept. 22
The Bathers’ first road tilt of the season comes against a Dragons team that allowed 36.1 points per game in 2016.

vs. Opponent to be named — Sept. 29
Mount Clemens was still in search of an opponent at press time.

at Climax-Scotts High (11-1) — noon Oct. 7
The Week 7 matchup presents Mount Clemens with its toughest task of the season. The Panthers went 11-1 in 2016, with their only loss coming in a Division 8 regional final. Climax-Scotts last season put up 46.1 points per game. The team has made the state playoffs every year since 2003.

vs. Detroit Leadership Academy (5-4) — 7 p.m. Oct. 13
Academy beat Mount Clemens last fall due to forfeit, during the Cougars’ inaugural season.

vs. Opponent to be named — Oct. 20
Mount Clemens’ opponent to close out the regular season will be announced at a later date.
