Warren Michigan Collegiate
Team name: Warren Michigan Collegiate Cougars
Last season’s record: 9-2
League: Charter School Conference
Returning starters: 13
First game: 7 p.m. Aug. 25 at Detroit Delta Prep
Michigan Collegiate last season scored at least 42 points six times. Cougars coach John Guth said that in order for the team’s offensive success to continue, the Cougars must control the line of scrimmage, minimize mistakes and finish drives.
“And always expect to win,” Guth said.
All seniors, quarterback Tracy Hubbard, fullback Doug Rogers, offensive linemen Sean Goss, Antonio Simley and Domo Harris, and wide receiver Jaylen Branch will lead the offense.
The Michigan Collegiate defense in 2016 pitched four shutouts and held two other opponents to six points. Guth said this year’s group has to create turnovers, minimize big plays, keep the opposition from extending drives, and use its team speed to play fast and physical.
Rogers (defensive line), Goss (linebacker), Branch (defensive back), Simley (linebacker) and Harris (defensive line) will anchor the Cougars defense.
Michigan Collegiate’s 2016 campaign ended in a 26-22 loss to Detroit Central in the Division 6 state playoffs. That setback is still on the team’s mind.
“We’re out for redemption,” said Guth, who led the team to nine straight wins before the playoff loss. “That one word says it all as it relates to this season for everyone in the program.”
at Detroit Delta Prep (6-4) — 7:30 p.m. Aug. 25
This is the first meeting between the Cougars and Pioneers. Delta Prep last fall made the state playoffs in just its second season as a varsity program. Collegiate is on a run of eight straight playoff trips.
vs. Detroit Edison PSA (4-4) — 7 p.m. Sept. 2
It’s Cougars vs. Pioneers for the second straight week. Edison has finished .500 or better the last two seasons, but is looking for the program’s first playoff berth. Collegiate at one point last season had a nine-game winning streak.
vs. Pontiac Notre Dame Prep (4-5) — 7 p.m. Sept. 8
The Fighting Irish downed the Cougars 21-14 in 2015 — the teams’ lone meeting. Prep lost four straight to end last season after starting 4-1. The Irish gave up at least 35 points in all their losses in 2016. Collegiate last season scored at least 35 points six times.
at Southfield Bradford (8-3) — 7 p.m. Sept. 16
Michigan Collegiate is 7-0 all-time against Bradford. The Cougars in those games have let up a total of 28 points.
vs. Walled Lake Central (3-6) — 7 p.m. Sept. 22
This is the first matchup between the Cougars and Vikings. Walled Lake Central is 4-14 over the past two seasons. Collegiate has only four losing streaks in its history.
vs. Detroit Old Redford (2-7) — 7 p.m. Sept. 30
A Cougars win would move them to 8-0 in the series. Collegiate bombed Old Redford 44-0 last fall. Old Redford lost five straight to end its 2016 campaign and suffered four shutout defeats last fall.
at Romulus Summit Academy (0-9) — 7 p.m. Oct. 6
Collegiate blanked Summit Academy 44-0 last season to move to 8-0 in the series. Summit Academy scored 40 points total in 2016 and allowed 417.
at Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy (6-4) — 7 p.m. Oct. 13
Collegiate improved to 3-6 all-time vs. Chandler Park with a 34-22 win last fall. The 34 points in the Week 8 win were the lowest for the Cougars over a five-week stretch. The victory also gave Collegiate the Charter School Conference title.
vs. Pontiac High (1-9) — 7 p.m. Oct. 20
This is the first meeting between the Cougars and Phoenix. Pontiac is 3-41 since the start of the 2012 season. Collegiate has never finished a season with a winning percentage below .600.
